Think like a drummer if you want better time

Hey Reader,

You put on a track you love.
You know the chords and the form.

Yet the groove still feels crooked.

Your right hand leans forward.
You hear yourself on top of the beat.
You play smaller and more timid instead of locked in.

This is the most common habit I see:

Rushing the groove and treating rhythm guitar like background noise.

Here is a short “think like a drummer” drill for this week.

  1. Turn your guitar into a drum
Lightly drape your fretting hand across the strings so everything is muted.
You only hear a soft “chick,” no open notes.
  2. Pick one great groove
Choose a song with a strong drum and bass feel you enjoy looping.
Anything with a clear backbeat works.
  3. Hear, then react
Strum steady eighth notes on the muted strings.
    Lock onto kick and snare.
Let the drum hit land in your ears first.
Then let your hand answer a hair behind it so the groove pulls you along instead of you yanking it forward.

Three to five minutes a day with the same song is enough.
No fills. No extra licks. Only time.

I recorded a short Groove Check demo where I walk through this exact drill over a classic feel:

Groove work like this sits at the center of how I coach. I work with adult guitarists who know the basics and want their time to feel solid on every song.

If you want a clear plan for your playing in the new year, you can grab a free New Year Playing Plan session here:

We will look at your current groove, name one or two hidden habits, and lay out a simple focus for the next few months.

Current students: you do not need to book one of these. We will map your New Year plan together in your regular lessons.
